University of Kucku – Nykytaidebiennaali

University of Kucku Biennial 2026 is an international contemporary art biennial taking place in Loviisa. The two-year art and learning project University of Kucku – Faculty of Art, Sustainability, Rest and Whatever culminates in the festival. The project is organised by the local cultural organisations Kucku (Art in Lov) and Loviisa Contemporary (LoCo), with sustainability in its broadest sense as its starting point: ecological, political and socio-ecological sustainability.

During 2025–2026, we have invited local, national and international artists to participate in residency programmes, collaborate with one another, and develop artistic works and socially engaged projects exploring questions around art and sustainability. The project functions as a collective learning process in which everyone is welcome to participate as “students” and gain experiences and “study credits” through activity and participation.

The Kucku Festival, taking place 18–20 September 2026, is the culmination of the project, transforming Loviisa into a contemporary art platform open to everyone.

Works will be presented both in traditional exhibition spaces and in unexpected public environments throughout the city. The biennial offers audiences an opportunity to encounter and experience art that responds to current questions surrounding sustainability and society, while bringing together the collaborative processes and artistic work developed throughout the project.
